Notes

First edition, first printing, of this history of the labour movement as a social and political force with distinct conditions and philosophies. "The work of John R. Commons and his colleagues dominated research in labor history and inquiries about working-class formation in the United States until very recently. Insisting that by the Civil War workers had retreated from politics to 'trade unionism pure and simple,' Commons and his colleagues painted a portrait of an adamantly nonpolitical working class resolutely focused on earnings" (Katznelson & Zolberg, p. 157).
