First edition, first impression. Presentation copy from the author, inscribed on a preliminary blank: "From the Author, 14 Jan: 20". Also present: the signed ("D. Haig") original typescript of Haig's Foreword (2 leaves, dated 15th August 1919, on GHQ letterhead); an autograph letter signed from Haig's private secretary Lieutenant-Colonel J. H. Boraston to the author, enclosing the Foreword "from the Chief, & I am glad to say that he has spread himself rather more than I expected him to" (two pages, same date, same letterhead); a warm autograph letter signed from Colonel Sir Francis Whitmore to the author, addressed as "My dear Bishop, This is what you were called in the 6th Cav Brigade" (Bickersteth had been a lay missionary in western Canada before the war), thanking him for getting in touch and hoping he will "come here to lunch" (2 pages, dated 4th May 1962, Orsett Hall, Essex, letterhead). In August 1918 Whitmore became co-commander of the brigade (page 104 and following of the present work). "On the outbreak of war Bickersteth joined the Royal Dragoons, and served with them in France until demobilization; during long periods of cavalry inactivity he wrote and completed A History of the 6th Cavalry Brigade (1919); but he was also frequently in heavy fighting, and twice won the Military Cross" (ODNB).
