Notes

First edition. This copy inscribed by the author, "Cuthbert Headlam with affection & esteem from Roger Lumley, 1936" and with Headlam's bookplate to the front pastedown. Lumley's father had been commanding officer of the regiment, and his brother Richard died in its service at Ploegsteert in October 1914, "shot by a sniper while kneeling up to look over a fence through his glasses he had been in France just a month a small party assembled in the churchyard to pay last tribute to Richard Lumley. Born in the Regiment, it may be said, most of his short life had been spent under the eyes of the little group of officers who stood round his grave." Roger dutifully followed his brother into the regiment in 1916, and was duly wounded during the their retreat near Vermand in 1918. An exceptionally nice copy.
