First UK edition, issued on the occasion of Russell's 90th birthday on 18 May 1962. The History of the World in Epitome is a 21-word summary of the human trajectory from the garden of Eden to the apocalypse in reaction to the Cuban missile crisis, with Themerson's charming pen and ink drawings. Printed on a single quire of gold metallic paper, it was reissued with the second British edition of The Good Citizen's Alphabet in 1970. The text was originally published in Norman Cousins's In Place of Folly (New York, 1961).
