Notes

First edition, this copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Bill Rogers, sincerely Lear B. Reed". Remarkable memoir by a former FBI agent detailing his years struggling against corrupt politicians and the mob, fighting prostitution, drug trafficking, and political subversion; "Mr. Reed combined in his person the formidable characteristics of Fearless Fosdick and Paul Revere, and he was equally energetic in his efforts to save Kansas City from the criminals and the nation from Reds, whom he regarded as much more of a threat to American than the Redcoats ever were. A crusader of Chief Reed's range and temperament was bound to kick up a row in any community, but the situation in Kansas City was one that enabled him to get maximum effect. He reformed, intimidated, irritated, and angered so many different kinds of citizens besides suppressing criminals and scattering Reds, he antagonised workingmen and union officials, African Americans, liberals, and a wide variety of ordinary citizens who began to wonder if democracy could stand the strain of absolute rectitude" (Reddig, Tom's Town:Kansas City and the Pendergast Legend, p.365). He was forced from office in 1941 over his handling of the notorious Leila Walsh case, publishing this sensational account of his struggles, no doubt, by way of self-justification. Uncommon either in the jacket or signed, the present copy offering both enhancements.
