Hymns.London: The Ovid Press, 1920 Stock Code: 142357
First edition, number 8 of 15 copies printed on Japan Vellum and signed by Rodker, from a total edition of 190 copies. This is the rarest and most deluxe issue of these modernist poems, which constitute Rodker's second collection, printed by Rodker himself at his own Ovid Press, with woodcut initials by Edward Wadsworth. The last time a copy of this issue is recorded at auction was in the sale of John Quinn's library, in 1924.
In the same year Rodker's Ovid Press published the work of Wyndham Lewis, T. S. Eliot, Roger Fry, Clive Bell, Ezra Pound, Roald Kristian, and Edward Wadsworth.
This copy was once in the collection of the great Eliot and Pound bibliographer Professor Donald C. Gallup, with the mailing envelope addressed to him at the Sterling Memorial Library preserved. Cloud notes of this special japon issue that the manner of printing was distinct from the octavo format of the paper copies, with the pages printed on one side only of each leaf.
Octavo. Original full vellum, green morocco label to front with gilt titles, gilt silk bookmarker. Mailing envelope to Professor Donald C. Gallup preserved. Housed in a cloth backed card chemise.
Vellum somewhat dust soiled but otherwise a nice sound copy in very good condition.
