Bob Thomas was a veteran Hollywood columnist who began writing for the Associated Press in 1944 and was a friend of Capote. Capote wrote to Thomas regarding the film adaptation of In Cold Blood in April 1967, noting "John Forsythe has an absolutely uncanny resemblance to Kansas Bureau of Investigation's Alvin Dewey" (Kennedy).
