[In Cyrillic:] Molodaia Rossiia [Young Russia].Carl Grüninger, Stuttgart , 1871 Stock Code: 127122
NotesSole edition of this notably rare and pseudonymously published book by one of the leading Russian economists of the 19th century. It was published in Stuttgart under the pseudonym "Evropeets European" which allowed Bezobrazov (1828-1889), who was in the civil service, to critique the development of the Russian economy, especially agriculture, a decade after the reform of 1861. Recommending the implementation of stricter Prussian-style legislation, Bezobrazov "argued that Russia's future depended on the generous economic and political rewards provided to productive investors of capital, and on the impositions of harsh punishments for actions that threatened the security of property" (Kingston-Mann, p. 161). OCLC locates just four copies in institutional holdings (in the US; the Library of Congress, Harvard, and the Illinois Center for Research; in Canada, the University of Alberta).
Large octavo (235 x 163 mm). Contemporary blue printed paper wrappers, uncut and unopened.
Extremities of wrappers discreetly built up and repaired, front wrapper bowed, contents tanned and foxed, else a very good copy.
