In Our Time.Paris: Three Mountains Press, 1924 Stock Code: 146728
Uncommon in such superb conditionFirst edition of Hemingway's second book, number 81 of 170 copies on Rives handmade paper. The fragile nature of this production means copies have not generally worn well, so copies as well preserved as this are very seldom encountered.
It was the final part of a series of books published by the Three Mountains Press under the editorship of Ezra Pound, entitled "The Inquest into the state of contemporary English prose". Having got hold of a copy, F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote immediately to Maxwell Perkins: "This is to tell you about a young man named Ernest Hemmingway sic its remarkable & I'd look him up right away. He's the real thing" (10 October 1924). In Our Time earned Hemingway a place beside Sherwood Anderson and Gertrude Stein among the most promising American writers of the time, and is today considered one of the most original short story collections in 20th-century literature.
Tall octavo. Original paper covered boards printed in red with titles in black, edges uncut. Housed in a custom blue cloth chemise and slipcase.
Woodcut portrait frontispiece of the author by Henry Strater.
A superb copy of this fragile publication, the usual slight offsetting to the binder's glue on the endpapers, exceptionally bright and sharp.
Grissom A2.1.a; Connolly, The Modern Movement 49.
