Nielsen's first gift bookFirst trade edition of Nielsen's first gift book. An article in the 1913 Christmas Bookman recommending this work describes Nielsen as "a young artist of curiously original gifts. There are traces in his drawings for In Powder and Crinoline of the influence of Aubrey Beardsley, and there are also an imaginative daring, a fantasy, a fascinating grace and decorative loveliness that are peculiarly his own and make his art unique amongst the illustrations of this year's books".
Quarto. Original grey cloth-backed boards, titles and pictorial designs in gilt to spine, and red and grey to front board, pictorial endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed.
24 tipped-in colour plates (including the frontispiece) mounted on stiff grey card within decorative borders, all with captioned tissue-guards, decorative title printed in grey and red on same stiff card, monochrome head- and tailpieces, decorative border
Uncommon pictorial bookplate of Madge Massey Cooper, in all likelihood the art collector who gifted several paintings by Susan Isabel Dacre (1844-1933) to the Salford Art Gallery in 1928. Corners gently bumped, extremities rubbed, a couple of small marks to boards, the binding otherwise fresh, faint toning to endpapers, occasional scattered spotting, otherwise unmarked. A very good copy.
