In the Wake of the Sun: A Book of Verse.London: The Sign of the Unicorn, 1899 Stock Code: 141861
First and sole edition, rather uncommon. Fred G. Bowles was best known in his day as a lyricist. However, his poem "Resurrection", published here, was anthologized in The Oxford Book of English Mystical Verse (1917). The Sign of the Unicorn was a small publishing house established by the "versatile journalist" and "mercurial 1890s figure" Ernest James Oldmeadow, publisher of the modernist magazines Beltaine and The Dome (cited in Brooker and Thacker, The Oxford Critical and Cultural History of Modernist Magazines, Volume I, 2009, p. 114). An attractive little Nineties book.
Small square octavo. Original dark red cloth, gilt-lettered spine and front cover, gilt strapwork motifs to spine, overall strapwork motif to front over emclosing the figure of a unicorn gorged with a coronet and chain, top edges gilt, others untrimmed.
Title page printed in red and black.
Spine and front cover variably sunned. A very good copy.
