Interest van Holland, often gronden van Hollands-Welvaren; [bound with:] Historie der Gravelike Regering in Holland.Joan. Cyprianus vander Graft, Amsterdam , 1662 Stock Code: 127339
NotesFirst editions. Interest Van Holland was the eminent Dutch political theorist's most renowned work, a critical analysis of the successful political economy of Holland and the Dutch Republic in general. "The only Dutch bestseller in economics, this work is mainly an argument for industrial freedom plus moderate duties" (Carpenter). It went through 13 editions by 1746, including English, French and German translations. The first edition was issued in both octavo and duodecimo format, this being the more desirable octavo issue. The second work, Historie der Gravelike, is on the history of the counts of Holland, arguing for a republican constitution and against the increasing power of the stadtholders.
2 works in 1 volume, small octavo (149 x 90 mm). Contemporary vellum, spine hand lettered in ink.
Engraved title page to second work.
Ownership stamp to front free endpaper. First title page loosening at foot. A very good copy.
