Rare large paper issueFirst edition, rare large paper issue, number six of an unspecified limitation on Van Geldes paper, numbered and initialled by the publisher. The limitation page notes a further limited run of 71 copies on Hollande paper each with an autograph poem by the author.
Associated with the Symbolist and the Decadent movements Verlaine's work was recognised as groundbreaking by his contemporaries and served as inspiration for composers such as Claude Debussy. Debussy set many of Verlaine's poems to music, including Clair de Lune which also became the inspiration for the famous third movement of his Suite bergamasque (1890).
Quarto (185 x 146 mm). Near-contemporary Parisian green half morocco, titles and foliate decoration to spine in gilt, marbled paper sides and endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, green silk pagemarker, original wrappers bound in.
