Ottoman hippological study with a section on Arab horsesFirst edition of this scarce, well-illustrated Ottoman Turkish work on horses written by a military officer, discussing various breeds of horse, horse-breeding, and equine medicine, and including an extensive chapter covering horses in the Arabic World and Middle East. Attractive, unusual, and uncommon, with no copy traced on WorldCat.
The book opens with a thorough outline of the horse in general, including anatomy, dentition, and a detailed discussion of coat colours and patterns. Some technical expressions throughout the text are given in French for clearer understanding, a common practice in Ottoman technical literature at the time for terms that did not previously exist in the language, requiring fresh coinages on behalf of the author. The next two sections describe various breeds, starting with Eastern horses, the Arab Horses and their variations in the Middle East, North Africa, the Balkans, Transylvania, Hungary etc., and into various other parts of the Ottoman Empire. The following chapter describes Western European breeds. The last part is dedicated to horse breeding, with advice on the arrangement of stables and boxes, and to equine medicine, including the diseases and medicines.
Octavo (195 x 133 mm). Contemporary red straight-grained morocco textured cloth, coated green, flexible boards, rubbed through, perhaps intentionally, on the ridges to an attractive two-tone effect, brown leather label to the spine, edges lightly sprinkled brown, red and pink patterned endpapers, pink silk page-marker.
Halftone portrait frontispiece, horse's head title-page vignette, numerous steel-engraved illustrations in text, a few near full-page.
Just a little rubbed, variable light browning ad sporadic spotting, very good.
