Italy, a Poem; [together with:] Poems.London: Edward Moxon, 1842 Stock Code: 148205
Ellen Terry's copy, given her by Henry Irving, annotated in memory of playing in The Merchant of Venice togetherThe copies of renowned Victorian actress Ellen Terry, with her signature to each title page and her Winchelsea bookplate (designed by her son Edward Gordon Craig) to each front pastedown; the Italy volume with her note to title page "From Henry - M of V." Henry must be Henry Irving, who played Shylock in The Merchant of Venice alongside Terry (as Portia) at the Lyceum Theatre. On p. 139 of that volume, Terry has written "M of V" under one of the many engravings after Turner that run through the book. A nice link between the leading British female and male actors of the time.
2 works, octavo (197 x 129 mm). Early green straight-grain morocco wrappers over original binding, spines lettered in gilt.
Rubbing to wrappers skilfully retouched, some light foxing to contents; very good copies.
