Offprint with the ownership inscription of poet and academic Ronald Bates to the front wrapper and his pencilled notes to the contents. Ronald Gordon Nudell Bates (1924-1995) earned his PhD from the University of Toronto, the subject of his doctoral thesis being James Joyce's Finnegans Wake. His teaching career was spent at the universities of Upsala, Toronto, and Western Ontario, and he was co-editor of works of criticism on James Joyce. His fellow Canadian academic Marshall McLuhan was at the University of Toronto from 1946 to the end of his career.
