Notes

First edition, first printing, of the first catalogue published for a Brücke Group exhibition. This catalogue for their breakthrough exhibition at the prestigious Galerie Ernst Arnold in Dresden in September 1910 reflects the group character of the Brücke. It is illustrated with original woodcuts of the paintings done by each other, not the original artist. "Heckel explained that the reason for this procedure was not a conscious desire for anonymity, but rather a feeling that a more original work would result in this manner than if the painter himself would make a graphic reproduction of his painting" (p. 116)
The Brucke Group was formed in Dresden in 1905 by four architectural students, Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Fritz Bleyl and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, "united in the belief that they could express their ideas more directly through painting and the graphic arts... from the very outset the Brücke group sought to find new ways of reaching the viewing public" (Edwards and Wood, p. 24). In 1906 they were joined by Emil Nolde and Max Pechstein. Their first exhibition was held in a lamp factory in 1906, as they were unable to to gain access to exhibiting space in Dresden, either private or public.
