Notes

First edition of this rare Kibbo Kift handbook written by "Head Man" of the Kindred, John "White Fox" Hargrave (1894-1982). All original Kibbo Kift productions are rare, and this one apparently particularly so, with no copy recorded on Copac or OCLC.
The Kindred of the Kibbo Kift imbued Baden-Powell's scouting movement with millenarian world-healing ambitions, drawing mystical beliefs from Frazer's Golden Bough and the writings of Aleister Crowley. Their members included several former suffragettes as well as photographer Angus McBean, folk-dance revivalist Rolf Gardiner (who interested his friend D. H. Lawrence in the movement and inspired Kibbo Kift qualities in Lady Chatterley's Mellors), and Roland Berrill who later founded Mensa. A more remotely involved "Advisory Committee" included H. G. Wells, Julian Huxley, Rabindranath Tagore, Maurice Maeterlink, and Havelock Ellis, and T. E. Lawrence is reputed to have permitted Kindred members to camp on his land.
Following from the movement's first publication The Confession of the Kibbo Kift (1927), "this little book gives the sum and substance of the Kibbo Kift outlook, formation, and work.... I hope what is set down here will be of use to those who, coming upon The Kindred for the first time, are anxious to have a short and simple explanation of what it is, and why." (Hargrave's Foreword). Clearly intended to generate interest in the movement, it includes instructions on how to apply for Kinship.
This was Roland Berrill's copy, with his ownership inscription to the title page, and his interesting pencil alterations to the text of The Covenant of the Kindred Called the Kibbo Kift at the rear. This is indeed a rare document of a fascinating moment in British social history, which still exists in the form of the Woodcraft Folk, and inspired a 70s rock musical, two major exhibitions at London museums, and several books.
