Klosterheim: or, The Masque.
By The English Opium-Eater.1832 Stock Code: 29409
NotesFirst edition of De Quincey's only original novel, a Gothic romance set in Swabia during the Thirty Years' War. A precursor of the 20th-century comic book superhero, De Quincey's masked hero lives secretly in the city, emerging in the nick of time to perform incredible deeds on behalf of the oppressed. (As De Quincey was by now constantly in hiding from debt-collectors, emerging only to deliver his manuscripts to publishers, some degree of self-identification seems likely.) Coleridge judged that "in purity of style and idiom it reaches an excellence to which Sir Walter Scott seems never to have aspired." Klosterheim was reprinted in 1898 as The Mystery of the Masque.
Octavo. Uncut in publisher's green diagonal-grain cloth-backed boards, printed paper spine label. Housed in a pale blue cloth solander case and chemise, spine lettered gilt.
With half-title, fly-title immediately preceding text and final advert leaf. Ownership inscription dated 1894 on half-title.
Rubbed, spine skilfully restored at head and tail, front free endpaper renewed, spine-label worn and chipped, title verso soiled, still a very good copy.
