Translated by Lawrence Hyde.London: Geoffrey Bles, 1925 Stock Code: 136864
Publisher's presentation copyFirst edition in English, first impression, publisher's presentation copy with tipped-in slip before the half-title reading "with Mr Geoffrey Bles's Compliments". Capek's science fiction novel, first published in Prague in 1924, centres on the invention of a catastrophically potent explosive, named to echo the devastating volcanic eruption of Krakatoa. Bleiler describes it as a "rich and wildly imagined work, unusual in its almost orgiastic baroque exploration of power, sexuality, and guilt" (Bleiler).
Octavo. Original grey cloth, titles to front board and spine in red. With dust jacket.
An excellent copy, only the top edge somewhat dust soiled, with the very sharp jacket, a little toned to spine panel, somewhat dust soiled to rear panel, and with a some light wear at the head.
