La Fortification du Champ de Bataille.1878 Stock Code: 48729
NotesFirst edition. This appears to be in the de luxe binding with the "atlas de planches" bound in at the rear, and is certainly one of a few copies printed on Holland paper. Essentially the final revision and expansion of Brialmont's Fortification Improvisée of 1870 - "une simple conférence, écrite pour l'armée belge" - taking into account the unfolding events of the Russo-Turkish War, and developed into "une oeuvre arrivée à maturité, un traité complet." Brialmont was one of the most significant thinkers in the field in the latter part of the nineteenth century. A really lovely copy.
Octavo, original red cloth, title gilt to spine with elaborate panelling in gilt and black, upper board similarly decorated centred on a large tool of a trophy of arms, lower board panelled in black, all edges gilt, marl endpapers.
19 folding plates at the rear.
Some light foxing and a few short splits to the fore-edges of the plates, which stand proud of the text-block, otherwise very good indeed.
