La France de profil.
Lausanne: La Guilde du Livre, 1952 Stock Code: 143858
First edition, first printing, of one of Roth's '101 seminal photographic books of the 20th century'. "In the early 1950s Paul Strand moved from the United States to Europe, largely to escape the spectre of McCarthyism... His intention with this book had been to find the perfect French village or small town and to photograph it in depth. But the ideal community was not forthcoming, so he utilized images that he had gathered from all over France to make this book with the left-wing writer, Claude Roy. Of all Strand's books, La France de profil (A Profile of France) is the truest collaboration with a writer... Strand finds poetry everywhere... including more weathered walls even than Atget, as well as equally weathered faces, lustrous clouds over fecund fields, and a fine picture of a lazy reed-lined stream" (Parr & Badger). Text in French. The quality of the reproductions is superb.
