First and limited edition, pre-publication presentation copy, inscribed on the half-title, "à Adolphe de Milly avec mon trés amical souvenir, Yvan Goll, Paris 11 avril 1949"; number 90 of 300 copies on Rives (from a total edition of 333). The colophon notes that "cet ouvrage a été achevé d'imprimeur le 15 Mai 1949". The recipient was a French-born writer, publisher, and cabaret owner who had worked with Goll on the New York-based French Resistance wartime newspaper, La Voix de France. Goll founded the Éditions Hémispheres in New York in 1943 to publish the works of surrealist writers exiled in the USA during Nazi occupation. This work is a collection of surrealist poems and illustrations of an occult nature, the title inspired by a 14th-century alchemical treatise by Basil Valentin. Brauner's etching represent the demons "Azoth", "Raziel", and the fascinating "Lilith", Adam's apocryphal first mate before Eve.
