Notes

First edition, first impression. Inscribed by the author on the half-title, "Pour Claudie et Claude Tardits en amical hommage, Claude Levi Strauss", and with the recipient pencil annotations. Claude Tardits (1921-2007) was a French ethnologist and anthropologist specialised in Africa, best known for his thesis on the Bamoum kingdom, published in 1980. He went to study in the US on the advice of his then-professor, Claude Lévi-Strauss, before meeting his future wife, the Belgian artist Claudie Hauferlin, in Mexico.
