Notes

First editions, presentation copies, each volume inscribed and signed by Sitwell to E. M. Forster on the half-title, each beginning "For Morgan" and dated, vol. I with the additional epithet "With affection and admiration" and vol. III "whose only fault is his invisibility". Each volume bears Forster's booklabel to the front pastedown. In a 1954 letter to William Plomer, Forster wrote: "I have been reading Osbert's autobiography, and greatly envy his energy and his willingness to control the course of events, also admire his geniality and excellent values". Forster reviewed the first volume for the BBC Eastern Service in May 1945, and stated "Osbert Sitwell combines sensibility, humaneness, and the desire to write well. The strands of the aristocrat, who wants to lead, and the artist who wants to create are finely combined". Forster was an acquaintance of Osbert Sitwell and his siblings, often meeting at social gatherings and poetry readings - one of which, in September 1943, was punctuated by a doodle-bug raid while Edith Sitwell read "Still Falls The Rain". Though friends, Forster remained on the periphery of the Sitwells and their literary set, perhaps earning the inscription of the third volume: "whose only fault is his invisibility".
