First edition thus, sole printing, number 182 of 200 copies on vélin du Marais paper with Jeanniot's illustrations in two states. First published April 1782; Laclos reputedly said of this controversial epistolary novel: "I resolved to write a book which would create some stir in the world and continue to do so after I had gone from it".
2 volumes, quarto (278 x 207 mm). Finely bound in near-contemporary French blue half-morocco ruled in gilt, titles in gilt direct to spines, raised bands, compartments richly gilt, marbled boards and endpapers, original printed wrappers preserved, top edges gilt, others untrimmed, silk page markers.
30 etchings by Jeanniot as follows: each volume with 10 plates of illustrations and 5 plates of headpieces, decorative initials, and culs-de-lampe, all in two states, monochrome and hand-coloured.
