Third edition, the most complete, of the most famous of all rose books, published under the direction of L. J. Pirolle, the collector of roses who had supplied Redoute with many of the specimens.
This edition was expanded with 23 new plates, the portraits of Redoute and Thory, and a biographical note on Thory which had not appeared in the first edition in folio of 1817-24, or the second edition in octavo of 1828-1830.
Redouté's Roses "secured for him his great popularity. This book is so well-known that it seems almost superfluous to add any more praise after nearly a hundred and fifty years of honors" (A Catalogue of Redoutéana, p. 25).
3 volumes (238 x 160 mm). Contemporary half calf, spines lettered in gilt and stamped in blind with cathedral design, marbled sides and endpapers.
With 186 coloured stipple-engraved plates (wreath frontispiece, 2 portraits of Redoute and Thory, 183 illustrations of roses).
Half-titles present. Slight insect damage at head of front joint of vol. I, light wear to tips and at head of rear joint of vol. II, bindings nonetheless firm, sporadic very light foxing yet generally clean and fresh. An excellent copy.
