Notes

First edition, first impression. With a very appealing provenance: from the library of Admiral of the Fleet John Jellicoe, first Earl Jellicoe (1859-1935), the victor of Jutland, who "deserves his place alongside the heroes of another age" (ODNB), signed "Jh Jellicoe" on the front pastedown. Sir George Grey Aston (1861-1938) was a Royal Marines officer and military correspondent for The Times. "In 1903 Aston was considered as a potential assistant secretary to the committee of imperial defence, but instead was recruited by Colonel Henry Rawlinson as an instructor at the Staff College (1904-7). Aston helped Rawlinson to forge closer army-navy links through joint exercises with the Naval War College. He advocated inter-service co-operation by writing a book, Letters on Amphibious Wars (1911), during his next posting, as a brigadier-general in South Africa (1908-12)" (ODNB). Letters on Amphibious Wars looks at four conflicts: the Chilean Civil War (1891), the Spanish American War (1898), the First Sino-Japanese War (1894-95) and the Russo-Japanese War (1904-05). Aston's specialism in this field meant that he was called to give evidence to the Dardanelles commission in 1917. Uncommon.
