Notes

First and limited edition, number 64 of 500 copies privately printed, presentation copy inscribed by the author, "To W. S. S. Rodgers with my friendship and affection 1/19/38 W. P. Chrysler", on the first blank leaf. The book's foreword describes the printing of this edition, designed as a Christmas remembrance for the Chrysler family to distribute among their closest friends as a gift, as "a work of love", in reference to its fine binding and exquisite typographical features. Life of an American Workman first appeared as a serialization in the Saturday Evening Post earlier the same year, and chronicles the life of the famed automotive industry executive and founder of the Chrysler Corporation Walter P. Chrysler.
W. S. S. Rodgers was president of the oil company Texaco. During the 1930s Texaco leased 14 floors of the Chrysler Building in Manhattan after Chrysler agreed to build the Cloud Club, an exclusive restaurant club for executives, across three floors of the building. Texaco remained at the same location, allowing Rodgers and Chrysler's friendship and business partnership to grow, until their move to Westchester county, New York in 1977.
