Life of Field-Marshal Lord Raglan:
with a Review of the Military Operations in the Crimea. Reprinted, by Permission from 'The United Service Magazine.'1855 Stock Code: 60766
NotesFirst edition. Extremely uncommon memorial volume - just 4 copies on OCLC, none in the US, all but the BL copy apparently second editions - this much enhanced by the addition of the extremely attractive card, which, mounted against the blue of the endpapers, gives the impression of a Wedgwood plaque. This copy with the ownership inscription of the Rev. J.N. Dalton, tutor to Queen Victoria's grandsons Prince Albert Victor (Eddy), Duke of Clarence and Avondale, and his younger brother Prince George, Duke of York (afterwards George V). Dalton accompanied them on their world cruise on the Bacchante, later Eddy's governor at Trinity, and his personal chaplain on his ascending to the throne.
Small octavo (164 x 97 mm) Original red embossed cloth, title gilt within laurel wreath to the upper board, mid-blue surface-paper endpapers.
Die-cut and embossed memorial card "Sacred to the Memory of the Heroes slain in the Battles of Alma, Inkerman & the Eastern War."
Very slightly rubbed, mild offsetting from the card at the endpapers, but overall an excellent copy.
