The recipient was the wife of Patrick Caird of Caird & Company, a Scottish shipbuilding and engineering firm based near Glasgow. The Caird family was influential in the area; John Caird (1820-1898), the eldest brother of Patrick, was Principal of the University of Glasgow from 1873-1898, Hunter's alma mater. A comprehensive biography of Hunter based on the author's personal knowledge and including an extensive collection of Hunter's personal correspondence.
