Life on the Mississippi.

NotesFirst US edition, in the very scarce publisher's calf. This copy in intermediate state "A" with the first state illustrated tailpiece on page 441, but the caption on page 443 corrected to "The St Charles Hotel". Clemens's classic anecdotal travel narrative, which contains an autobiographical account of his childhood experiences, as well as his life on the river as a steamboat pilot. Huck Finn makes a lengthy cameo on pages 42-61, a story within the chapter detailing Huck and Jim's attempt to reach Cairo which does not appear in Huckleberry Finn, published two years later. To find a first edition copy of this title in any example of the publisher's calf binding, let alone one in such smart condition, is very uncommon.
Quarto. Original publisher's half calf, spine gilt-tooled in compartments with red and green morocco title labels, marbled sides, endpapers and edges.
Illustrated frontispiece, steamboat vignette to title page, illustrated plates and vignettes in the text throughout.
Contemporary ownership inscription. Minor rubbing to extremities, but an extremely smart copy indeed in excellent condition.
