List of the Flag-Officers of His Majesty's Fleet.
[Bound with:] An alphabetical list of the Commission Officers of His Majesty's Fleet: with the Dates of their First Commissions.London: Admiralty Office, 1786 Stock Code: 141378
Superbly bound and a rare survivalA delightfully bound volume containing two rare early registers listing officers in the service of the Royal Navy in 1786, including, of course, 28 year-old Captain Horatio Nelson, commissioned to the rank 11 June 1779. Designed to be used, and frequently updated, few copies lasted long, a light scatter of them surviving institutionally.
The names of a great number of the officers who had served in the recently concluded American War, and those who would go on to serve in the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars can be found here. Intended to be kept as a pair, the first list runs by rank, and then in order of seniority with dates of commissions, the easier to contemplate possible candidates for promotion, several blank pre-printed sheets are bound in at the end for manuscript additions; the second is ordered alphabetically by rank more readily to find an officer by name. It is extremely unusual to find these utilitarian documents of administration so handsomely presented, for devotees of an eighteenth-century British label, the one found here is exemplary.
Unsigned, small octavo format (178 x 104 mm). , 24, 42 leaves, printed on versos only, rectos blank; 163 pp. Contemporary red morocco, black morocco label, low bands milled gilt, compartments with attractive flower basket centre-tools framed by flowing foliate corner-pieces, broad floral panel to the boards, board edges milled gilt, all block edges gilt, Placard marble endpapers.
Bookplate of the naval collection of Robert J. Hayhurst to the front pastedown. Just a little rubbed, corners a touch knocked, pale marginal toning, an excellent copy.
