Lord Randolph Churchill.
London and New York: Macmillan & Co., 1906 Stock Code: 125587
First edition, first impression. Churchill had it in mind to write a biography of his father soon after Lord Randolph's death in January 1895, and was appointed by the late statesman's literary executors to do so in autumn 1902. Churchill worked on the biography, his most substantial literary project so far, for the next two and a half years.
The book was published to "almost universal acclaim in the Press" (Churchill, Winston S. Churchill II) with the Sunday Times remarking on Churchill's "maturity of judgement, levelheadedness and discretion" and the Spectator praising his style: "He has chosen the grand manner... but the general effect is of dignity and ease."
