Notes

First edition, first impression. A collection of 19 humorous essays, reworked from articles published in Vanity Fair between 1914 and 1923. In his introduction to the book, Wodehouse explains that he borrowed the title from "the old story... of the nervous after-dinner speaker" who is speaking in a faltering undertone when a voice demands "Louder, please", to be followed soon after by another voice requesting, "Louder, please, and funnier".
