Notes

First edition of this popular collection of essays by philosopher, poet, and early activist for gay rights Edward Carpenter (1844-1929), considered "unique because as well as documenting the material conditions of women under capitalism, it mapped the inner life of struggle and personal transformation involved in realising the 'new life' under socialism" (Brown and Corns, p. 100). The chapters first appeared as separate pamphlets published by the Labour Press, 1894-5. A variant brown cloth binding with plain blue endpapers and without the terminal advertisement leaf at the rear is also known, without known priority.
