Notes

Mimeograph typescript of T. H. White's play, "Macbeth the Knife", sent to Harley J. V. Usill, founding director of British record label Argo Records. The typescript is inscribed on the title page, "from T. H. White / Alderney / Channel Isles", and has a lengthy written note to "Dearest Usill" about the possibility of recording the play: "For sound on a record, every melodramatic effect would have to be used... This is for fun and splendour, for Richard Burton to let himself go in, not for dons." The is no record of Macbeth the Knife having been recorded by Argo, though there is record of a Shakespeare parody under the same title being performed by Danny Kaye on The Danny Kaye Show, 2 October 1963. This typescript includes three contemporary autograph letters signed from White to Usill, mentioning Richard Burton again (with whom Usill had a working relationship) and discussing the recording of other works including The Sword and the Stone, which was recorded by Usill at Argo in 1963, with music by Benjamin Britten. T. H. White (1906-1964) was an English author best known for his sequence of Arthurian novels, The Once and Future King, first published together in 1958. He published a number of other works, including England Have My Bones (1936), and in 1954 he translated and edited The Book of Beasts, an English translation of a medieval bestiary originally written in Latin.
