Map of India, from the most recent Authorities.London: W. H. Allen & Co., 1863 Stock Code: 141021
A rare early iteration of this fine map, presented here in remarkably fresh condition, with no copies recorded on Library Hub or WorldCat as being present in international institutional libraries; in fact, all editions, from 1844 to 1879, exist in only one or two examples of each. This version is important for including railways completed and under construction, and telegraph lines, both systems coming into widespread operation during the 1850s. A neat contemporary annotation notes the presence of a branch line at Giridih, Jharkhand.
Octavo (250 x 155 mm). Original brown diaper-grain cloth, gilt-lettered spine, ornamental blind panelling to sides, title within an attractive cartouche gilt to front cover.
Hand-coloured map dissected into 24 panels, unfolding to 960 x 855 mm, linen backed, drawn and engraved by John and Charles Walker.
Spine sunned, variable mottling, slightly crude signature of "A. Cambell" at head of one panel verso, over an earlier erased signature. In excellent condition.
