Notes

A very attractive set of this classic Gothic novel about a man who sells his soul to the Devil, by the novelist and Protestant clergyman Charles Maturin. Although Maturin's vocation initially seems somewhat incongruous with the Gothic genre, his novel also offers a social commentary on England in the early 19th century, and a heavy critique of Catholicism. First published in 1820, the alterations of this new edition consist of some minor corrections and the added material - the memoir and bibliography.
