Memoir and Correspondence of General James Stuart Fraser.London, Whiting & Co., Limited, 1885 Stock Code: 140476
NotesFirst edition. Fraser's service in India was "long and distinguished" (ODNB). He joined the Madras army at 17 and escorted the Mysore princes to Bengal in 1807. After serving as private secretary to Sir George Barlow, the governor of Madras, he was deputy commissary during the Madras expedition to Mauritius (1810). Being fluent in French he assisted with the restitution of French and Dutch possessions in 1816-17. "He was present in several actions during the conquest of Coorg, and carried out the negotiations that brought the war to a close" (ODNB). He continued to rise steadily through the ranks until he came up against the "high-handed measures" of the governor-general, Lord Dalhousie. Relations became strained and Fraser resigned his post as Resident of Hyderabad and returned home. Fraser may have received little formal recognition for his employment in India but this rather handsome volume, weighty in both senses of the word, makes for a fitting memorial.
