First edition, first impression, one of 1,500 copies. At the author's request, the first impression was anonymous. The book was immediately popular and Sassoon's anonymity was not long preserved; his name was included on the title page halfway through the printing of the second impression (of which 500 copies were printed anonymously), and in all subsequent impressions.
Description
Octavo (181 x 119 mm). Finely bound by Bayntun-Riviere, in full red morocco, titles to spine in gilt, raised bands, single gilt fillet frames to compartments, boards, and turn-ins, marbled endpapers, gilt edges.
Condition
The binding bright and firm, internally crisp; a fine copy.
