NotesDeluxe limited edition, number 107 of 780. The first Scott edition was published in 1811; the first English translation from the French appeared almost a century earlier in 1714. An account of Hamilton's brother-in-law, Count de Gramont, and the intrigues of the Restoration court, it is "written with such brilliancy and vivacity that it must always rank as a classic" (DNB). This edition is handsomely presented and extensively illustrated.
Quarto (280 x 190 mm). Contemporary brown half morocco, mottled paper boards, spine lettered in gilt, gilt floral roll to boards, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, fore edge untrimmed.
Engraved frontispiece, 11 plates, 33 engraved head- and tailpieces, all on india paper and mounted on thick paper. Bookplate to front pastedown.
An excellent copy, with some very minor wear to front board and negligible rubbing to extremities.
