First edition, first printing. Inscribed on the front free endpaper by the photographer "Lincoln, from Walker". Lincoln Kirstein is most noted for his hand in founding the New York City Ballet, he was a close friend of Walker Evans who he had befriended in his early days in New York. In 1938 Kirstein collaborated with Evans on 'American Photographs' selecting and sequencing the photographs for the exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art. This was the first exhibition in this museum devoted to the work of a single photographer. The catalogue and book included an accompanying essay by Kirstein, giving Evans a literary legacy.
