Mingus Plays Piano: spontaneous compositions and improvisations.New York: Impulse! 1964 Stock Code: 144415
Mingus at the piano - signedSigned cleanly in black marker pen on the inside cover "Charles Mingus"; material signed by Mingus is decidedly uncommon autographed albums particularly so.
In this case, Mingus has signed above his portrait by Bob Thiele, in which the great bassist is attired immaculately "English gent"-style, complete with bowler and rolled umbrella, the ensemble nicely subverted by the addition of shades and the fact that he is clutching a copy of the recently released and emphatically titled Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus.
This unusual excursion sees Mingus unaccompanied at the keyboard, at which he "more than held his own". "His touch and harmonic sense were secure rather than virtuosic, but he more than passes muster on a resonant and richly toned instrument" (Penguin Guide).
12-inch vinyl LP (Impulse! AS-60), new plain paper sleeve (original sleeve also present), original gatefold album cover.
Slight nick at foot of back cover otherwise particularly bright and sharp; disc in excellent condition.
