Notes

First edition. Martin was born to a German father and a mother "of German descent who had been reared in England." Despite being a sickly child, he fell under the thrall of Charles Lever's "service novels" and decided on a career in the army, and once sent to his Fatherland for his health he settles on the idea of joining a Prussian cavalry regiment. And so it was that Martin found himself fighting with the Prussian 6th Dragoons in a war that took him to both the Western and the Eastern Fronts, and included a period as a prisoner in Siberia. Uncommon.
