Mother Goose.New York : 1901 Stock Code: 102486
NotesFirst edition, first state, dated "1901" on both the title and copyright pages, with Humpty-Dumpty on the verso of the dedication leaf, and 4pp. following colophon. On each illustration appears Denslow's trademark device of a stylised seahorse, or hippocampus (normally alongside the initials "DEN"). Denslow was the first illustrator of Frank L. Baum's The Wizard of Oz, for which author and artist shared the copyright. However, the two men fell out over the division of the royalties from the 1902 stage adaptation of the novel, and never worked together again.
Quarto. Original blue cloth backed pictorial boards, pictorial endpapers.
Numerous illustrations by Denslow.
Marginal tear to dedication leaf not affecting text, extremities of boards slightly worn and spine lightly faded, occasional loosening between spections, but much better than usually encountered; an excellent copy.
