NotesFirst Jessie Willcox Smith edition, first printing. Smith was commissioned by Good Housekeeping to produce 17 illustrations for Mother Goose. They were first published as a series issued between December 1912 and April 1914 in black-and-white only. Although these "monotone illustrations did little to impress the viewer as to the genius of these paintings... the Jessie Willcox Smith Mother Goose was an instant success and the series of illustrations ranks among the finest ever rendered for these classic nursery rhymes" (Nudelman).

Neat ink gift inscription to front pastedown "To Thomas Alden Nolder, from Mother, Christmas 1915". Extremities a touch rubbed, light scuffing to front board pictorial onlay, the binding otherwise firm and bright, slightly shaken but internally clean and fresh. A very good copy in the original box, traces of previous repairs, worn, a side panel loose, the others starting, otherwise unmarked.
