Notes

First Jessie Willcox Smith edition, first printing. Smith was commissioned by Good Housekeeping to produce 17 illustrations for Mother Goose. They were first published as a series issued between December 1912 and April 1914 in black-and-white only. Although these "monotone illustrations did little to impress the viewer as to the genius of these paintings... the Jessie Willcox Smith Mother Goose was an instant success and the series of illustrations ranks among the finest ever rendered for these classic nursery rhymes" (Nudelman).
