Mountain Dream Tarot.Rochester, NY: Inky Press Productions, distributed by Light Impressions Corporation, 1975 Stock Code: 145673
First edition of the first known photographic tarot deck, this set signed by Nettles and dated 1977 to the title card, with the often missing introductory leaflet and loosely inserted note of Nettles's other works. The set is in notably bright condition.
The idea for the set came to Nettles in 1970 while she was enrolled as a printmaking student at the Penland Art School in Bakersville, North Carolina, in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Family and friends, especially artists from Penland School served as models for the set over the five years it took to complete the work. Nettles appears in the deck as the Queen of Pentacles wearing the same black taffeta dress that had inspired her dream. She used a labour-intensive process to produce the deck which involved blending negative over negative in print and re-photographing original hand-coloured prints for publishing. The original hand-stitched gelatin silverprints for the cards were gifted to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. In total, 800 decks were produced, which were then sold and distributed by Nettles through Light Impressions.
A second edition, featuring Nettles's then adult children, was released in 2001, a third edition in 2012, and a commemorative edition in 2019. In 2007 Bruce Springsteen used the sword pierced heart of the three of swords card from this set for the design work on his 15th studio album Magic.
78 monochromatic cards (120 x 100 mm). Housed in the original card box (130 x 110 x 30 mm).
Very light occasional rubbing to card edges, a near-fine set in the box with minor rubbing to edges.
