Mr. Rhythm.New York: RCA Victor, 1956 Stock Code: 144498
Signed by Freddie Green and pianist Nat Pierce in black ball-point pen on the front cover; the guitarist's signature a little stuttery due to an obdurate nib. An attractive and uncommon pair of signatures. This is the first pressing of Green's first 12-inch LP outing as leader - for nigh-on fifty years he was a rock in the Basie rhythm section.
Not surprisingly the Mr. Rhythm septet comes on like slimmed-down Basie, and includes alumni Joe Newman (trumpet), Henry Coker (trombone), Milt Hinton (bass), and Jo Jones (who shares drum duties with Osie Johnson). Nat Pierce is described by The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings as "a one-man rearguard for big band swing, who depped for Count Basie and was one of jazz's quiet gentlemen". Al Cohn takes the tenor and clarinet chair. "This album shows Green to be a fine leader who is happy to remain in his role as rhythm guitarist. For fans of Green, and for those who enjoy swinging jazz with great soloists, Mr. Rhythm is a fine release" (AllMusic).
12-inch vinyl LP (RCA Victor LPM-1210), new plain paper sleeve (original sleeve also present), original album cover.
Some shelf wear to cover, partially split at top and bottom edges, some loss of surface paper from spine yet remains good, clean and bright; disc in excellent condition, neat printed ownership label of one Miss Susan Connick of Pacific Palisades to label of Side 1.
