A leaflet produced by the WSPU regarding the conditions of Emmeline Pankhurst's imprisonment after the window-smashing demonstration in Westminster of 1 March 1912. In this leaflet Dr Ethel Smyth's (1858-1944) letter to the Times, dated 17 April 1912, is reprinted. In this letter Dr Smyth provides an account of the conditions faced in Holloway Prison in order to counter the claims by the Home Secretary, Reginald McKenna, that Pankhurst's cell was "a sort of earthly paradise". The Home Office's response to this letter, rejecting her claims, was published in the Times on the 20 April and is included here, as is Dr Smyth's counter response, which was published in the Times on 26 April. Over 220 suffragettes, including Pankhurst and Dr Smyth, were arrested and imprisoned after a wide-scale demonstration in which hundreds of women attacked store fronts with stones and toffee hammers. Both women were sentenced to two months' imprisonment at Holloway, and whilst Dr Smyth did not serve the full sentence, Pankhurst was held until 4 April when she was released on bail, only to be sentenced to a further nine months' imprisonment in May.
Dr Smyth spent two years campaigning with the Women's Social and Political Union, during which time she formed a close relationship with Emmeline Pankhurst and provided the movement with the music for its battle hymn, The March of the Women, the lyrics to which were provided by Cicely Hamilton.
